In his sweeping meditation of human history, Arnold J. Toynbee noted that cultures are healed and rejuvenated by creative minorities led by creative leaders. Toynbee noted that before this healing work could begin, the creative leader must engage in what he labeled “withdrawal-return.”3 To break the spell that society has over them, the creative leader must withdraw from her society. Once the leader has withdrawn away from the influence of the society, he or she can no longer look to it for a sense of identity and meaning. Meaning must be found elsewhere—outside of the society.
